چکیده

We propose that future experiments aiming at the detection of deviations from the 1/r 2 gravitational law on submillimetric scales can be used to test the modified Newtonian dynamics theory (MOND). Current experiments are able to test the gravitational field of masses m ≈ 1g at distances r ≈ 200 µm, implying that they are probing accelerations well above the MOND limit (a 0 ≈ 1.2 × 10 −8 cms −2). We show that MONDian effects begin to be important at the submillimetric level for masses m ≤ 1 mg. MOND makes predictions that are clearly distinguishable from those expected in a scenario with compact extra dimensions. This will enable direct confrontation between the two theories if future experiments can improve their mass scales to the milligram level.

The Dolgov-Kawasaki instability discovered in the matter sector of the modified gravity scenario incorporating a −μ/R correction to Einstein gravity is studied in general f(R) theories. A stability condition is found in the metric version of these theories to help ruling out models that are unviable from the theoretical point of view. For example, the theories f(R) = R + αμ/R, where α and n are...

Phenomenology, Astrophysics and Cosmology of Theories with Sub-Millimeter Dimensions and TeV Scale Quantum Gravity

We recently proposed a solution to the hierarchy problem not relying on low-energy supersymmetry or technicolor. Instead, the problem is nullified by bringing quantum gravity down to the TeV scale. This is accomplished by the presence of n ≥ 2 new dimensions of sub-millimeter size, with the SM fields localised on a 3-brane in the higher dimensional space. In this paper we systematically study t...

N ov 2 00 8 Constraining Post - Newtonian f ( R ) Gravity in the Solar System Matteo Luca Ruggiero

We consider some models of f(R) gravity that can be used to describe, in a suitable weak-field limit, the gravitational field of the Sun. Using a perturbative approach, we focus on the impact that the modifications of the gravitational field, due to the non-linearity of the gravity Lagrangian, have on the Solar System dynamics. We compare the theoretical predictions for the precession of the lo...

N ov 2 00 8 Geodesic Congruences in the Palatini f ( R ) Theory

We shall investigate the properties of a congruence of geodesics in the framework of Palatini f(R) theories. We shall evaluate the modified geodesic deviation equation and the Raychaudhuri’s equation and show that f(R) Palatini theories do not necessarily lead to attractive forces. Also we shall study energy condition for f(R) Palatini gravity via a perturbative analysis of the Raychaudhuri’s e...
